Thermoelectric materials are solid-state semiconductor materials with the ability to convert electricity into heating and cooling, or heat into electrical power. The thermoelectric phenomenon was discovered in 1821 by Thomas Seebeck and the theory was further refined in 1834 by Jean Charles Peltier. Peltier devices involve applying a electrical current, which creates a hot side and a cold side. They are found in a variety of applications, including everything from inexpensive coffee cup heaters, to car seats, to advanced cooling chips in opto-electronics. With improvements in thermoelectric efficiency and cost, thermoelectrics could one day replace liquid/gas/mechanical cooling systems in things like refrigerators and air conditioners.
